PREMISE
As you arrive, you hear in the distance the faint sound of a little girl's voice singing, "10... 9.... 8... 7.... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1~! Ready or not, here I come." You've got nothing on you save the clothes on your back and perhaps one or two personal belongings, and there's nothing before you except for the ruins of what used to be a beautiful city. But as night sets, it's a completely different story. Not everything is as it seems.

Loosely based on the movie Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek and the LJ game [livejournal.com profile] letsplayotokoyo: (It's a really fantastic movie, so you should watch it if you ever get the chance.)
The film is based around "Otokoyo" (オトコヨ?, lit. Man Hunt), a game of hide and seek played by children, wearing fox masks, near the ruins of an abandoned old city. The children who play this disappear, believed to be spirited away by demons. Kakurenbo follows Hikora, a boy who joins the game with hopes of finding his missing sister, Sorincha. The storyline is built on the idea that Tokyo is losing its natural aesthetic, which includes child's games such as hide and seek in order for industrial progress to ensue i.e. lighting the city of Tokyo costing innocence of childhood games.
SETTING
The city is small, and looks as though it used to be beautiful. But for whatever reason, it is now in ruins. Anything that could've been considered useful toward surviving and every day living has already been taken or used, leaving behind nothing but rubble and vermin. There are no people in sight save the people who arrived along with you. On one side of the city is a large body of water; it's hard to say how big exactly that water is, but without the proper supplies, going out into it would mean death. On the other side of the city is a long, winding road that seems to stretch out for miles upon miles with absolutely nothing in sight. You can try to leave, but either way you go, you probably won't last long.

Night, however, is a different story. Blink, and you'll find yourself in the same city, but now well-lit and bustling with activity. The buildings that used to be fallen apart have somehow rebuilt themselves, and there are now people who weren't there during the daytime: shop owners, villagers, even law enforcement. The bonus? Everything seems to be free, so take whatever you want and feast to your heart's desires. ... Or... maybe not. Unfortunately, not everything is as it seems. Creatures lurk in the darkness, or perhaps the food is poisoned; whatever the trial or obstacle, it differs night by night, so stay on your guard. As for the townspeople, they seem nice enough, just don't ask them any questions about the city, because they'll immediately become strangely defensive. They won't know anything about ruins, for they've lived in this city for years, and they don't recognize you at all.

GAME PLAY
Posting. Because of the way this game is set up, the timeline will be a little different. 1 full day in game = 1 week in real life. Each "day" will be Monday-Wednesday, and each "night" will be Thursday-Sunday.
  • Players are free to post Day posts whenever they'd like.
  • Night posts will be made weekly by the mods and players are encouraged to make their own threads in those. The body of the post will describe the 'event' that will occur that particular night.
  • Players are welcomed to use the NPC villagers as they'd like. However, remember that actions do have consequences, so becoming unruly or picking fights with the NPCs will result in the appropriate consequences. Depending on the event, mod-controlled 'monsters' or obstacles may thread-jump at any time. If you'd prefer not to have that, simply mark the thread appropriately.
  • All posts will be face-to-face. There are no networks, cell phones, computers, etc. here.


ABILITIES, ITEMS & POWERS
You arrive with nothing except the clothes on your back and various small, non-harmful personal items that you happened to have been holding/carrying when you were suddenly taken into the city. (For example, if you had photos of your family in your pocket, those can come along. But if a pocket knife or gun will mysteriously disappear.) You will find yourself completely powerless and without abilities.

Powers will come back during the nights, but slowly and with time. Each consecutive night you experience in the city will increase your powers by just a little (this will be entirely player-regulated, so please use your own discretion. If you feel another player has been unfairly powering up their characters, please let them know/grab a mod.) However, whatever abilities they've earned during the night time will not carry over during the day.

Everything from the previous night disappears when a new day starts. However, anything that you were holding in your hands from the night before will stay with you. You're only allowed one item at a time per night, and it must be in your hands in order for it to stay (not in your pocket, not stuffed in a bag, etc.) so choose carefully. Thankfully once the item has seen the light of day they won't disappear ever (unless consumed/destroyed/expired/etc.), so it is possible to end up hoarding together a pile of belongings and building yourself something super fancy if you wait long enough. (Or you could just collect food for the next day.) This is not knowledge that will be given to anyone, so it is up to you to either figure it out or make friends with a veteran who's willing to share information.

DEATH
Once you die, you may be brought back, however you'll lose every item you've accumulated and all your memories of your time in the city. Your powers will start at the beginning as well.

All dropped characters will die. Feel free to write out your own death by using the drop post. If you don't, a death will be chosen for you based on the events of the closest night post.

ACTIVITY AND APPLICATIONS
This is an invite-only/referral game, so players will have to know someone already in game to join. There are no applications and everyone is allowed up to three (3) characters. Characters are first-come-first serve, but if there is a character that seems OOC, please notify a mod and it will be reviewed by a committee of peers.

Canon characters from all different fandoms are welcomed, as are OCs. However, AU characters will not be accepted at this time unless they are canon AUs. While applications are not required, a post or link to more character information is, for those who are unfamiliar with the character.

Activity checks will happen monthly. Players will simply have to show some sort of proof (minimum of five (5) comments made by you to count) of activity within the last month. Threads that were started the previous month but continued into the current month may be used as long as they have not been used for past activity checks. AC will occur the first week of each month, and only comments made in the previous month will count. (Example: July 1st-7th will be for activity made in June. Only comments made in June will count toward the five comments minimum. You may use a backdated thread that is continued from something that was started in May so long as it was not used for May's AC. Posts/threads started in April can not be used but we highly encourage continuing them regardless!)

Hiatuses may last up to a month. If you've dropped a character or could not make AC, you must wait up to two (2) weeks before asking for the character again. (But remember that your character will have died in those 2 weeks and will be starting all over again.)

Please remember that, while RP is meant to be fun, that it is still a social game, so while the activity requirements are not extensive, it wouldn't be much fun if everyone only did one thread every AC just to pass.

Premise
You find yourself standing in an unknown room, in front of a woman known as The Dimension Witch. Maybe someone sent you here, perhaps you stumbled here yourself; either way, she's agreed to grant you one wish. The price? The thing that is most important to you.

But you're desperate. And it isn't as though you know how to find your way home. So you agree, and you give up what is most important to you, in exchange for... well... careful what you wish for, read the fine print before signing on the dotted line, all that good stuff.

Because, this wish of yours? It isn't easily granted with the snap of a finger. Now that you've given up what is most important to you, you must go on a quest across many different worlds, only after you've completed what is required in each world will you finally be granted your wish.


Logistics and whatnot
  • Starting out. Characters will be dropped (randomly?) into one of x number of worlds. To exit a world, there must be a task to complete/item to find/etc. Once that world has been exited, though, characters can come and leave as much as they want.
  • Communication/travel. Each character and/or group (groups can either be people who've been forced together by Yuuko, or people who would never/rarely separate -- like Alphonse and Edward from FMA) gets one White Mokona.
    • Possible idea: everyone has to travel in groups of 3-5? Can't leave the world unless everyone in the group has completed what they've come for?
    • Mokona can transport people to other worlds by, essentially, eating them and then spitting them back out into the next world.
    • Having Mokona around will also translate languages into one that you'll understand; if you lose sight of her, have fun trying to understand anyone not from your world.
    • Mokona can also communicate with other Mokonas, even across worlds. An example would be if Alphonse was in World A, and Morgana was in World B, their Mokonas can project an image/hologram of the other person, and they can talk to each other. It'd be like having 3D skype...
    • Only video (maybe voice) communications are available; no text.
    • White Mokonas can also communicate with the one Black Mokona in Yuuko's possession. So it is possible to ask Yuuko questions/ask for help at any time. Whether or not she'll answer, though... is up to debate.
    • As a note: While friendly and cute, Mokona does tend to talk a lot and can get annoying. They like to tease those they're with and tend to be rather hyperactive. Also they only refer to themselves in third person.

  • Worlds. The number of worlds should be proportional to the number of characters. So start off with, say, four, and then build a new one every time x number of characters are added to the game. That way, it balances out. World building would be a thing, too. This'll definitely be a collective effort.
  • Wishes. Hmm. Examples of wishes in Tsubasa were: Syaoran gives up Sakura's relationship with him (she will never remember who he is) in order to restore all of her memories; to do this, he has to travel worlds and locate fragments of her memories (in feather form.) Kurogane wishes to return to his world, so he has to continue to jump worlds until he finds the right one.
  • Gameplay. Would work as an invite-only and/or by referral private musebox type thing... and everyone should be involved in plotting and world building, ideally. There'll be biweekly check-in/plotting posts, maybe.


Fandom AU
  • Same character, different storyline. Every world could have a couple of fandom AU characters. They'd be the same faces, similar personality, just their lives would have been spent entirely in that world. It's all they've ever known. Players of those AU characters can also help build the world they live in. Tl;dr: canon characters travel worlds, fandom AU characters stay put.
  • Can't jump worlds. These characters are stationary. In fact, they don't even know there are other worlds out there.
  • Only one per world. If there's already an AU Alphonse in World A, there can't be another. However, there could potentially be a different AU Alphonse in World B. I think the cap should be 2 max of the same character overall though. Maybe 3 max? They'd never meet, they won't know the other exists, etc.
  • Mei's just fantasizing. This is all because I want to play out my silly ships.


Activity?
  • Pacing. I want this to be laid back. After all, it's not an official game, it's just a sort of invite/referral-only musebox type. I'm okay with slow and backtagging and all that good stuff.
  • However... Slow =/= inactive. It'd be bad if people just brought in a bunch of characters and then never did anything.
  • Possible Activity Checks? 1 thread bimonthly? At least for canon characters. Since Fandom AU characters don't world jump, maybe they don't need activity requirements. But I do want ones for the canon characters; especially since there'll only be one of those.
  • Events. Events/plots/etc. should definitely be a thing. I imagine each world would have their own theme/event, since this is a 'quest' game. I think one major event should happen once a month, and it can alternate between worlds? January can have a major event in World A, February can have a major event in World B, March could have one in Worlds C and D. Depends on how many worlds there are.


World Ideas
  • SPARTACUUUUUS... ..... Characters are dropped in as slaves to different ludus. Each ludus has a head/slave owner known as a Lanista. And there's a head slave known as the Doctores which is the one who trains all the other slaves to become gladiators. Characters can either be placed in a gladiator role (in which case, they'll be forced to fight in tournaments and the victor of each tournament gets to move on to the next world; those who die in these tournaments are forever respawned until they win) or they can be a household slave. Depends on what they're after, I guess.
  • IDK man. I haven't thought that far yet.

[ The voice coming from the Dreamberry is puzzled. Puzzled, but for the most part very calm. ]

Those who die, return? Is this a new act in God's play?

[ A small pause. As though the speaker is taking time to process this information for himself. ]

How?

[ Suddenly, a wail of pure anguish. ]



[ The voice sounds sad. Almost in tears. ]

Why them, God? Are they your loyal servants? Do they speak your word?



[ Then, pure anger. Hatred, even. ]

And yet you did nothing to save Jeanne. My sweet Jeanne. Your most loyal.

You cast her away.

[ A pause.

Silence. ]




[ And we're back to the beginning again. Calm. Collected. As if none of the above had happened. Almost like this audio broadcast has just started. ]

Do all who die, return?

As for victims, they are free to notice similarities in his voice and make the connection. :3

Also, as a side note, the Dreamberry lists him as 'Bluebeard' who... is an actual thing. So, if someone is familiar with the stories at all and happens to be looking through the list, that might be a clue. Though, really far out there. ]]

[ When the recording starts, it only shows a ceiling. Definitely old, perhaps a church. The way the voices that can be heard are echoing also seems reminiscent of how voices tend to carry in a building like a church. ]

Where are we? [ A young woman's voice. From the sounds of it, late teens, early twenties. She's trying her best to sound calm, but there's still a strain in her voice. ]

It doesn't matter. [ Despite the man speaking being younger than the woman, his voice doesn't really show that. Flat intonation, almost too calm. ] It's just for some time.

... Is this... another one of those viruses?

No. This is less cruel. [ The sounds of steps, then his voice is louder. He's come closer. ] You remember?

Then... you've brought me here? [ There's a long stretch of silence. As he approaches, the feed shakes as she tries hastily to shove whatever is recording behind her. And then, when she speaks again, it's cautiously. ] Remember? You mean... that virus? ... At the beach?

Yes. That lie. [ He can be heard coming closer still. ] Who are you calling? [ Not bothering to wait for an answer, the feed shakes once more, showing first a glimpse of the girl, then a man with white hair and an eyepatch, scars all over his face. His single golden eye is trained on whatever device is recording and he raises a knife, brings it down. The feed ends as the phone is stabbed. The girl screams, but it is cut short. ]

[ Tonight, a few photos have been sent out via an anonymous source:

(1) A man is lying face-down on the ground. From the bruises on his body and the small rips in his attire, it's clear that he's been roughed up. Is he dead? It's hard to tell. Even though you can't see his face, it might be possible to guess who this man is from his... unusual hair.
(2) Another shot of the same man. He hasn't moved, but now the contents of his backpack are scattered around him. There's one pile off to the side of Pokeballs and other more valuable items. Looks like the photographer may be planning on taking those.
(3) Same man. Same position. This time, a giant red R is painted on his back. (Don't worry, Envy... it washes off.)

No text accompanies the photos. From how dark the photos are, it seems that this attack was done at night. But if you're going to go looking for Envy to make sure he's alright, you won't find him, because the attacker waited an entire day to send out these photos, giving Envy enough time to regain consciousness. ]

[ Envy is babysitting Gluttony today, and there are shenanigans going around. Right now, somewhere in the city of Goldenrod, Envy and Gluttony are hiding in dark alleys and watching people pass by.

Just as you happen to be passing by, Gluttony will suddenly be rushing out at you! He's been instructed to not eat anyone, but it's still got to be a pretty terrifying thing to see, having a large man -- is that even a man? Could be a Pokemon, in all honesty... -- charging at you, mouth wide open, drool everywhere, and sporting a rather crazed look that only people who haven't been fed in a while have.

... What do? ]
